Hello watercolor artists! I've created a 20 minute tutorial on how to paint this watercolor tulip using several different techniques including wet into wet, and layering.Although the bunnies have eaten most of my tulips this spring, we can still enjoy the process of painting them :-)

Here are the supplies I used. You can substitute any of these colors of course!

  • Arches 140lb cold pressed paper ( I recommend a paper that is 100% cotton like arches or fabriano. There are other brands of course too. These work best with wet into wet watercolor painting.)
  •  Colors- I used a blend of Winsor Violet and Opera Pink for the flower and cobalt blue and Hans yellow (or winsor yellow for the leaves and stem.
  • Paint brushes- I used several different rounds, from size 4 to 10. I used the Princeton Neptune series and silver black velvet.
  • For palettes, I recommend using stoneware, porcelain or ceramic. Most plastic palettes tend to create too much or a water repellent surface and the puddle of color tends to 'bead up' on the palette rather than spread out which makes it more difficult to see the consistency of your mixture. I've found that porcelain or ceramic palettes work best for watercolor. Even an enameled butcher tray works great.
