Watercolor Hydrangea Tutorial

Hello Artists! Many of you have asked for a tutorial on how to paint hydrangeas! I hope you enjoy this one, it's not too long, and feel free to share your paintings with me or on socials, or anywhere you like!

This video is more of a demonstration than a tutorial, since I unfortunately didn't capture a full view of my paint palette (and color mixing). In my watercolor online courses, I show my palette and color mixing as well as traceable outlines for the flowers.

However, I still thought this demonstration was helpful on how to capture the essence of a hydrangea in watercolor.

Here are some special notes on brushes and paint color.

  • I typically mix my greens by using blue and yellow (a touch of red to tone it down). My blues are cobalt blue or ultramarine and Hansa yellow, yellow ochre, or a medium cad yellow. I sometimes add a touch of white gouache for a pastel look.
  • for brushes I like flats, including Princeton Neptune 1 inch and blick angled flat 1/4 inch.
  • paper is arches 140lb cotton cold pressed
