Welcome to my watercolor delphinium tutorial! You may have seen my previous tutorial on how to paint a 'mini' version of this painting, but I wanted to show you how I created this larger piece. I did shorten the tutorial since the original video was very very long! But I felt that a few key parts of the demonstration would be helpful to show in this tutorial.

Here are the supplies I used

  • round number 8 natural hair brush (unknown brand- a very old and well loved brush of mine :-)
  • Number 6 silver black velvet brush
  • Arches 140lb cold press paper
  • Winsor Violet, magenta, cobalt blue and some rose madder, plus dark green ( I used perylene green or. mix of sap and yellow ochre.

I took a loose approach to this painting, beginning with light values, loose rounded shapes that taper near the top to little buds. While the paint was still damp on the paper, I dropped in bits of bolder more saturated paint into areas where I thought the centers of flowers might be.. This is the fun part of loose watercolor floral painting. I begin with this loose approach and then as that first layer dries I can begin adding more refined detail with leaves and stems. This gives just enough definition to the flowers while still remaining fresh, loose and whimsical. I use a smaller and more detailed brush at the end to get those fine lines in the greenery.
